The Library has elected to extend the tax form service one more year, despite severe space constraints at our facility. A limited number of state and federal printed tax forms are available now. Staff members will be able to help you find other tax forms online that are not available here in print. Tax forms, instructions and publications can be printed online for 10 cents a page. The Reference Staff can also direct you to other sources of taxpayer assistance.

Free computer classes for adults

The library offers a variety of free computer classes for adults. Brush up your skills in Intro to PCs, Email Basics, and Internet Basics or learn about Microsoft Office 2007 software such as Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint.

We also offer two extra help classes: Computer Help for Seniors and Computer Help for Genealogists. Bring your questions and our instructors will provide assistance.

There are also classes that are presented in Spanish: Introducción a PCs, Microsoft Word 2007 Nivel 1, Microsoft Excel 2007 Nivel 1 and Internet Básico.

New this year are drop-in help sessions for eBooks and eAudiobooks using My Media Mall. Bring in your ereader, tablet or smartphone, and we will show you how to browse, check out and return Library ebooks and tips and tricks for using your device’s advanced features.

School is back in session! The Library offers a resource called HelpNow -- a live tutoring service designed for a range of academic needs. Tutors are available Monday - Sunday, 2:00 PM -- 11:00 PM CST. HelpNow is a comprehensive suite of tutoring services designed for a range of academic needs; whether it’s tackling a tough homework problem, learning an academic skill, or writing a term paper.

These are the HelpNow services:

Homework Help: Students submit a question in our online classroom and receive live, one-on-one assistance from a Brainfuse tutor.
Skills-Building: Our skills building service helps students master a concept or skill through state-aligned online lessons, presented by Brainfuse tutors in one-to-one sessions. HelpNow Skills Building has been designed for a variety of age groups and academic needs.
24-Hour Writing Lab: Our writing instructors help students become better writers by providing constructive feedback and other assistance within 24 hours of receiving a student’s submission.
Test Center: Visit our online assessment library to take practice standardized tests (SAT, ACT, GED and more) and practice subject specific tests, like math and science. Get results instantly and, if you choose, share them with one of our tutors for a targeted skills building session.
24/7 Help Center: Students submit questions via our online form and a tutor will respond to the student’s question within 24 hours.
Foreign Language Center: Students receive live online help with their foreign language homework from our fluent foreign language tutors.
Adult Education Center: Adults can receive live online help from our trained adult education specialists in areas such as US Citizenship testing, resume and cover letter writing assistance and core subject education.
Full Spanish Speaking Service: Spanish-speaking tutors are offered co-extensively (same subjects and hours of availability) with our English-speaking tutors.

The Library has a scanner!

We are excited to announce the Library now offers access to a
free public scanner. Come in and try it today! From this station,
you can scan a document and do four basic things to it:

Save it to a USB Drive
Save it as a GoogleDoc
Email it
Print it

If you scan to print, the print job goes through the Print
Release Station and you pay for it and release it via your Library
or Single Card. The only cost is for the print job; otherwise, the
scanning is free.

If you have questions, please ask for help at the Reference Desk.
The equipment is incredibly simple to use, featuring a touchscreen
interface.

The purchase of this equipment was funded by the Friends of
the Library, through the proceeds from the fundraising they do
all year long, including events such as the Annual Book Sale
and new Arts and Crafts Fair. Thank you very much, Friends!

Workforce Services Division of Will County will bring the Mobile Workforce Center to the Route 59 parking lot behind the Library every Wednesday, 9:30 AM to Noon and 1:00 PM to 3:30 PM.

The Mobile Workforce Center is a state of the art computer lab that travels to communities throughout Will County. Job seekers can choose from the following services:

assistance creating/revising a resume
keyboarding lessons
internet access to assist in your job search
information on other job search resources

This is a free service and no registration is required.

Smartphone App

A smartphone application allows you to find books, DVDs and other items using your Web-enabled mobile phone. Search the catalog and place items on hold or renew checked-out items, easily find the library’s hours, phone number or driving directions. You can find upcoming events, register for library classes, download digital books or even contact a librarian.

The app is located at www.libanywhere.com/m/331 and works on any Web-enabled phone. iPhone and Android users can download the app by searching for “LibraryAnywhere” in the iTunes App store or Android Marketplace. The app download is completely free and easy to use. A library card is required for some services.

Interlibrary Loan

Did you know that if our Library does not have the materials you need that we will do our best to find them?

We belong to a consortium of libraries in northwest Illinois called PrairieCat. When you search our online catalog, you may choose to search just the Plainfield Public Library, several Plainfield area libraries or all the libraries in PrairieCat. Place holds on the materials you need, and they will arrive at our library usually in 3 to 5 business days.

If our consortium does not have the materials you need, please talk to our reference staff. We will be glad to contact libraries from across the country and locate the materials you need. We will first contact libraries that will lend to us for free and materials usually arrive within a week or two (sometimes a bit longer depending on the mail).

Prefer to search yourself? Checkout WorldCat.org. Search for items located in other libraries. When you find an item, enter Location Information of Plainfield, IL and then click the link to request the item. Home Delivery Services

We provide delivery of materials such as books, audio-books, CDs and DVDs to card-holding patrons who are unable to physically come to the Library.

To receive books and other library materials, you must have a Plainfield Public Library card.
Home delivery is offered as an ongoing service or temporarily according to your needs.
Materials will be delivered and picked up on Thursdays.
You will receive a phone call before the materials are delivered, as well as a reminder call before they are picked up.
Materials will be delivered in a weatherproof library bag and will be dropped off at your premises if you are not available at the time of delivery. Please put materials in the same bag for pick up.

Book Donation Guidelines

When you are finished with spring cleaning and garage sales, the Library is happy to accept book donations for fiction and non-fiction books, music (CDs only) and DVDs. Donations must adhere to the following guidelines:

All materials donated become the property of the Plainfield Public Library District and will be used as the Library desires. Not all items donated will be put on the shelves. The majority will go in our ongoing book sale, which generates revenue that is used to purchase new materials. Donated items will be sorted and examined as time permits.
Please donate only recent materials. If it's more than 5 years old, recycle it or give it to an organization like the AAUW Naperville branch (630-961-5971) or S.C.A.R.C.E. Book Rescue Center in Glen Ellyn (630-790-4345).
Please be sure the items are in good condition. Ripped covers, musty books, broken spines and books that have been written in are also not accepted.
The Library cannot give monetary value to books donated, but will issue you a receipt indicating the total number of books donated.
Please bring materials into the library. Do not leave materials in the bookdrop or on the sidewalk.
Due to space and storage constraints, the Library is able to accept only two bags or boxes per donation.
The Library does not have help on site to unload your donations; you must be able to bring these in yourself to the main floor Reference Desk.
Materials that are donated to the Library must be in containers that do not have to be returned. Please use bags or boxes. The Library is not responsible for returning crates.
The Library cannot accept magazines, textbooks, encyclopedias, newspapers, computer software, electronics or office supplies.
The recycle bin in the parking lot is available if you would like to recycle bulk paper only. The Library receives some revenue from paper recycling.

Special Instructions for Large Donations

If you have a large quantity of items to donate, please wait until the Friends of the Library Annual Sale in August.
Prior to the sale, announcements will go out about when and where the library will be accepting donations.
Often, during this period, there are volunteers who can assist you with unloading your donation.

A limited number of state and federal printed tax forms are available at the Library. Due to changes the government has made in mailing forms directly to taxpayers, the Library has elected to extend the tax form service one more year, despite severe space constraints at our facility. Staff members will be able to help you find other tax forms online that are not available here in print. Tax forms, instructions and publications can be printed online for 10 cents a page. The Reference Staff can also direct you to other sources of taxpayer assistance.

You will get to spend one hour with a reference librarian who can provide you with personal research assistance on a topic of your choosing.

Sessions are held either at a table or public computer in the Library, with the possibility of the computer lab or a study room also being used. Time and place are determined between you and the librarian who is giving the session. Sessions are one hour in length. News for You Online.com is an online news source designed for people who are learning to read, write, or speak English. Seven new stories are posted weekly for 48 weeks a year. These engaging articles are based on world and national news events. They are written at reading levels 3-6 and ESL levels high-beginning and low-intermediate.

Each article includes audio where readers can listen to the whole article or sentence by sentence. Key vocabulary is shown in bold with the definition appearing by just rolling the mouse over the word. An interactive crossword puzzle provides an enjoyable activity while strengthening vocabulary skills. Each article is accompanied by two sets of interactive exercises to enhance understanding of the key concepts. Readers can get immediate feedback to their responses. All of the articles are contained in an archive that can be accessed at any time by subscribers.

You must be at least 18 years old by election day to register. Bring in two forms of identification, at least one showing your current address. Did you know that if our library does not have the materials you need that we will do our best to find them?

We belong to a consortium of approximately 200 libraries in northwest Illinois called PrairieCat. When you search our online catalog, you may choose to search just the Plainfield Public Library or all the libraries in PrairieCat. Place holds on the materials you need, and they will arrive at our library usually in 3 to 5 business days.

If our consortium does not have the materials you need, please talk to our reference staff. We will be glad to contact libraries from across the country and locate the materials you need. We will first contact libraries that will lend to us for free and materials usually arrive within two weeks (often sooner, but sometimes a bit longer depending on the mail).

Prefer to search yourself? Check out WorldCat.org. Search for items located in other libraries. When you find an item, enter Location Information of Plainfield, IL and then click the link to request the item. Book Donation Guidelines

All materials donated become the property of the Plainfield Public Library District and will be used as the Library desires. Not all items donated will be put on the shelves. The majority will go in our ongoing book sale, which generates revenue that is used to purchase new materials. Donated items will be sorted and examined as time permits.
Please donate only recent materials. If it's more than 5 years old, recycle it or give it to an organization like the AAUW Naperville branch (630-961-5971) or S.C.A.R.C.E. Book Rescue Center in Glen Ellyn (630-790-4345).
Please be sure the items are in good condition. Ripped covers, musty books, broken spines and books that have been written in are also not accepted.
The Library cannot give monetary value to books donated, but will issue you a receipt indicating the total number of books donated.
Please bring materials into the library. Do not leave materials in the bookdrop or on the sidewalk.
Due to space and storage constraints, the Library is able to accept only two bags or boxes per donation.
The Library does not have help on site to unload your donations; you must be able to bring these in yourself to the main floor Reference Desk.
Materials that are donated to the Library must be in containers that do not have to be returned. Please use bags or boxes. The Library is not responsible for returning crates.
The Library cannot accept magazines, textbooks, encyclopedias, newspapers, computer software, electronics or office supplies.
The recycle bin in the parking lot is available if you would like to recycle bulk paper only. The Library receives some revenue from paper recycling.

Special Instructions for Large Donations

If you have a large quantity of items to donate, please wait until the Friends of the Library Annual Sale in August.
Prior to the sale, announcements will go out about when and where the library will be accepting donations.
Often, during this period, there are volunteers who can assist you with unloading your donation.

Macy's Museum Adventure Passes are now available!

Visit the Plainfield Public Library to find out current pass availability. Library staff will be able to check on what is available, and also check out the passes.
Check out a Museum Adventure Pass using your library card at the Plainfield Public Library. Libraries have a limited number of passes for each participating organization, and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Passes cannot be reserved or checked out online or on the phone.
One Museum Adventure Pass may be checked out per person, per loan period. The loan period is SEVEN DAYS, and will expire after the date printed on the pass.
Admission offers vary per museum. For some, two or four people may be admitted free per pass, or by carload. If admission is free, another special discount will be offered.
Passes are for one-time use and are not transferable. Your name will be printed on the pass, and you may be asked to show identification at the museum. The museum will collect the pass when you visit.
Check the list of participating museums for details on each cultural destination. Find out what discoveries await you, get directions to the museum, and review each museum’s pass entry offer, including any restrictions that may apply.

National Library Week is April 11-17: Celebrate Thriving Communities

Celebrate National Library Week by supporting the community. Donate unexpired, non-perishable goods in exchange for fines all week with the Food for Fines program. The donations will benefit the Plainfield Interfaith Food Pantry. Find the golden book and win a prize! Library bags filled with goodies will be raffled at the end of the week. Stop by the Library between Sunday, April 11th and Friday, April 16th to pick up a flyer for Panera .Visit Panera on Friday, April 16th from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm and 10-20% of the day's proceeds will be donated to the Library for new materials.
